Juror Qualification

If you have received a Juror Qualification Questionnaire, please read this section of the website carefully. The Questionnaire is not a summons for jury service. Your name has been drawn by random selection and you are being considered for jury service in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia.

Every odd-numbered year, the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia refills its jury wheels with names of potential qualified jurors. To begin this process, the Court mails Juror Qualification Questionnaires to potential federal jurors residing in the Western District of Virginia. Names are randomly selected from lists of registered voters for the counties that comprise the Western District of Virginia. During the next few months, the jury staff will process the completed Juror Qualification Questionnaires. Please complete the Questionnaire and returned to the Court within ten (10) days.

The Court then creates pools or lists of qualified jurors who may be randomly selected to serve on grand or petit jury panels in the federal court. Our jury staff uses an automated jury system to randomly choose names to summons as potential jurors.
